Why do I need a wallet?

Freename Web3 Domains and Web3 TLDs are blockchain-based assets. When you mint a domain, it is created on-chain and stored in a wallet, just like other digital assets.

That is why a wallet is required: it is the tool that receives the domain and lets you approve blockchain transactions when needed.

Non-custodial wallets

Most users mint and manage domains with a non-custodial wallet such as MetaMask or other major wallets. Non-custodial means you control the private keys. This matters because approving blockchain actions happens through your signature, and only the wallet owner can sign.

Prefer not to manage a personal wallet?

If you do not want to use a personal wallet like MetaMask, you can use Freename’s Custody Wallet to mint your Web3 TLDs and Web3 Domains. The Custody Wallet option is available only on the Polygon and Base blockchains

Important security note

If you use a non-custodial wallet, you are responsible for safeguarding your private keys and recovery phrase (seed phrase). Store them somewhere safe and offline, separate from your everyday devices (for example, written down and kept in a secure place). Do not save them in screenshots, notes apps, cloud storage, email drafts, or messaging apps. Anyone with your recovery phrase can access your wallet and assets, and lost keys cannot be recovered.

FAQ

1) What is a wallet, in simple terms?
A wallet is an app or account that stores your blockchain assets and allows you to approve transactions using a signature.

2) Why is a wallet required to use Web3 Domains or Web3 TLDs?
Because they are minted on a blockchain. A wallet is needed to receive and hold the asset after minting.

3) What does “minting” mean?
Minting is the process of creating the domain on-chain and assigning it to a wallet address.

4) What is a non-custodial wallet?
A non-custodial wallet is one where you control the private keys. Only you can sign transactions, which gives you full ownership and control.

5) Which wallets can I use?
You can use MetaMask or other major non-custodial wallets that support the required blockchain network.

6) Can I use Freename without having my own MetaMask or personal wallet?
Yes. If you prefer not to use a personal wallet, you can use the Freename Custody Wallet to mint Web3 TLDs and Web3 Domains.

7) On which blockchains is the Custody Wallet available?
The Custody Wallet can be used to mint only on Polygon and Base.

8) What is the key difference between a personal wallet and a Custody Wallet?
With a personal non-custodial wallet, you control the private keys. With a Custody Wallet, the custody solution is used instead of you managing a personal wallet app.

9) Do I still need to sign transactions?
With a non-custodial wallet, you sign transactions directly in your wallet.
