Freename Secures U.S. Patent for Web3 and DNS Integration Protocol
New patent establishes a technical standard for domain name resolution and interoperability between Web2 and Web3 ecosystems.
ZURICH, Switzerland – (October 6, 2026) – Freename AG, a Swiss-based internet infrastructure company, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded the company a patent for a protocol enabling interoperability between blockchain-based domain registries and the Domain Name System (DNS). The invention, attributed to Freename Chief Executive Officer Davide Vicini, defines a framework for resolving Web3 and Web2 domains within a unified technical standard.
This patent introduces an innovative IT protocol that allows browsers, wallets, and service providers to adopt Web3 domains in a secure and interoperable way. This addresses the current absence of regulation in the decentralized Internet by establishing a technical standard that functions as a foundation, similar to the role played by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Web2.
The patented system resolves conflicts when identical names exist across DNS and blockchain registries by indexing data from both sources into a unified resolution layer. It also describes a management platform that enables organizations and service providers to determine how domains are handled, featuring on-demand DNS servers to ensure security, flexibility, and continuity.
